album art for the debut ep by “the here and now”
Now that I have a record player (best christmas present ever) I’ve treated myself to two 7-inch purchases. This one was the second. A great band called Gayze I heard on a mixtape on The Teenage Head (more about that later). The best part is, their 7-inch is clear with black splatters, very pretty.
This track (‘Done To My Love’) is the standout but I have a soft spot for ‘You Got Me Wrong’ which sadly only goes for 55 seconds. I have played it on loop for about an hour though and it so effortlessly loops back into itself, maybe that was the band’s intention?
It was the first song I heard in ages that made me stop what I was doing and kind of go into a 1000 mile stare trance. Always a good sign.
Everything on Bleeding Gold is pretty ace too.
The Sweets - Moon Queen
The Sweets consist of two brothers Zach and Justin playing garage rock out of Winston-Salem, NC in the USA. They’re released an unprecedented 20 songs on their humble BnDcMp in the past 3 months alone and it all sounds sick. Slow down you guys before you burn yourselves out! Filled with fuzz, raw to the bone, their tunes remain poppy and impossible not to like. Reminds me of Sonny Smith, and maybe more specifically one of his 100 ficticuous bands that saw an actual 10” release besides the compilation volumes: Earth Girl Helen Brown. The Sweets sounds like they would be best live, or maybe on cassette blasting from a boombox beachside. Their energy seems unstoppable.
Also love their choice of vintage nudie shots for album art, ‘specially the ridiculous pregnant hippes on Hai.
Definitely grab
someall of their music from their BnDcMp here, everything is name your own price, so throw them a bone to help them get something physical released.
The Sweets - ‘John Childers’
Heard this one today via Bleeding Gold Records. Maybe by tomorrow I will be over it, but right now, it is making me feel so good.
It is always nice when a band really gets psychedelic music. A psychedelic experience is about epiphanies and realising truths. That whole eye in the pyramid business has so little to do with it, fuck that pyramid. You know you are listening to good psychedelic music when all of a sudden you feel safe and warm like you are back in the womb.
So, following this train of thought. Bands that copy the psychedelic sound are actually rapers of your consciousness. You can spot the victims everywhere, usually wearing headbands and that aforementioned pyramid with the eye. If they listen to ‘Rose & the Thorn’ by the 13th Floor Elevators, they wouldn’t even shed a tear. Poor souls.

Blanche As a Name is definitely a band to watch. They’re awesome, only problem is that all their press is in French. But their music is in English so that’s good. Their song Frost is my personal favorite but the rest of their EP is available here and on itunes: http://blancheasaname.bandcamp.com/ The lyrics to their songs are a bit dark, but the music is lighter and sweet. They’re definitely worth checking out.
